'Prohibition was a major reform movement from the 1840s into the 1920s, and was sponsored by evangelical Protestant churches, especially the Methodists, Baptists, Presbyterians, Disciples and Congregationalists. Kansas and Maine were early adopters. The Women's Christian Temperance Union, founded in 1874, and theProhibition Party were major players until the early 20th century, when the movement was taken over by the Anti-Saloon League. By using pressure politics on legislators, the Anti-Saloon League achieved the goal of nationwide prohibition during World War I, emphasizing the need to destroy the political corruption of the saloons, the political power of the German-based brewing industry, and the need to reduce domestic violence in the home'. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Saloon_League : 'The League used pressure politics in legislative politics, which it is credited with developing.[9]When it came to fighting wet candidates, especially as Al Smithin the presidential election of 1928, the League was less effective because its audience was already Republican. Unable to cope with the failures of prohibition, especially bootlegging and organized crime as well as reduced government revenue, the League failed to counter the repeal forces, led by prominent Democrats, which helped Franklin D. Roosevelt win in 1932. A new Constitutional amendment passed easily in 1933 to repeal the 18th amendment, and the League lost its power.'

If you have an older computer that slows down with cookies + whatever our librarian said to right click on the task bar - the blue base at the bottom of the screen to the right of the green Microsoft "Start" icon to get to "Task Manager" and delete the "Part.exe" [ Ranish Partition Manager] program which can slow down older computers.
She also said to go to "Internet Options" by left clicking on "Start" then click on "Control Panel" [I have to right click to open things on this computer..then left click the "open" on the little window that opens up...]
...Then I right click on "Internet Options" and it should open to the "General" tab and it should say below that
"Delete temporary files, history, cookies, saved passwords and web information"
I checked the box and clicked "Delete".
From "Control Panel" you can also open the "Add or Remove..." - silver compact disc like icon - which is Add or Remove Programs".
I found a lot of programs on the computer that I didn't want to use...
My neighbor somehow set up her "Disk Defragmenter" ~
"Start" - "All Programs" - "Accessories" - "System Tools" - "Disk Defragmenter"....
[The dash sign means click on the option indicated in the window that opens up when you clicked on the previous option...wanted to put a right arrow like others do but it won't stay when I update...]
...to automatically defragment her hard drive disk every week...
Next to "Disk Defragmenter" in "Systems Tools" you find "Disk Cleanup" which "Windows XP Simplified" [a great picture book that shows you the Windows screens and how to use them] says you should run "...any time your hard drive space gets too low ' or if your hard drive space is not a concern, run it once every two or three months...
[it deletes unnecessary files]
Nancy's advice and getting rid of some of the bigger files I wasn't using really sped this Dell 2002 up
Ray Dixon from Microsoft Support says we can automate Windows Disk Defragmentation the way he says, but I could't find " windows\system32 " or " defrag.exe " and this still worked - so:
Begin: Left click "Start"
Open "Control Panel"
Double left click "Scheduled Tasks"
Double left click "Add Scheduled Task"
Left click the "Task Wizard Dialog" Box [mine was little yellow "Accesibility Wizard" box]
Left click "Browse"
I couldn't find " windows\system32 " [notice that is not the usual / backslash, but \ forward slash] folder so I typed it in the "File Name" box + clicked "Open"
I also couldn't find " defrag.exe " [notice the dot between defrag and exe] in the menu that popped up after " windows\system32 " so I typed it into the " File Name " box too
- then clicked open and

I think its time we as americans come to an honest and open discussion about these 'auditormoriums" we do not need these fully assault cross insurernse senters...
I have no problem with regular tombs...but i thought those old storage ones weren't in use anymore...i guess i won't go poking around the one in my town afterall
• Difficulty sleeping or night terrors.
• Intrusive images or thoughts of the event that don’t go away.
• Inability to sleep or function in daily life.
I must be screwed then...this happens to me practically every day
i was actually very surprised. I've been to bonnaroo many times, and this was the first show in Maine (i've seen phish 3 other times) that hasn't had a "mostly maine" crowd. It was peaceful, even when I tripped over people everyone was like "its ok man" or "sorry". It was a great time. If this had been a "maine people show" there would have no doubt been rioting, and wannabe thugs squealing tires on main street...
next week's Rob Zombie another band i've seen; I pray for bangor...glad i have to work that night!
I had a great time. This was my fourth show and I'm a local - this being the first for me at an actual PHISH show...not at a festival so it was a new experience kind of.
I was surprised at the number of cops who were downtown and their restraint was incredious. I'm not going to say drinking in public is a good thing - even bought a few jello shots in front of a couple cops on shakedown lol! But BPD could've been handing out tickets left and right had they wanted and I finally felt at a show at the waterfronts - relaxed and in a good mood.
The worst thing was the exit though. If there was a REAL emergency happening I'm sure there would be a human crush in that exit. Open both exits up next time.
I've seen phish three times - all out of state, and with about 5X as many people attending. I partially agree with what you're saying because the concert venue itself is in a very poor location. I've been to Bangor waterfront concerts a few times - and very well know that there will be traffic congestion, confusion, large crowds, and probably pan-handlers looking for money. Thats the biggest problem. You add probably the largest crowd to a concert in bangor's history and its on a main artery into/out of bangor then we'll porbably have problems.
I don't blame the phish show - I'm going tonight - I blame the poor placement of the conert venue itself.
thats what i'm hoping...its not gonna be a "bangor people" show...its going to be a "phish/hippie" show...most of us are generally more positive and laid back...i'm assuming the only thing you'll see in the news is probably arrests/charges for minor drug violations like marijuana. There won't be many wife beating, booze swiggling, drive your grandad's 30 year old truck people hopefully...
I'm not saying it to anger anyone. I'm just honestly wondering why don't we organize a straight pride parade in Bangor? I'm not particularly religious but I believe in being straight and my love of female anatomy. I don't get why people are so against it. I accept homosexuality as an everyday occurance and pretty much what the world has come to. Be prideful you are gay - but why can't I be prideful that I"m straight? Some people on here say that "it happens everyday" but you don't see actual parades, or festivals encouraging heterosexuality. I am proud of who I am - and I think we should have an equal right to celebrate our individuality
thats the point i'm trying to make; i really honestly don't care if you're gay or not...i haven't met a gay or lesbian that hasn't said "i'm gay" within our first conversation
i think it is time that we, as americans come to an open and honest discussion about these 'bicycles', Americans DO NOT need them. what purpose does a bike have other than to cause accidents and irritation to licensed drivers.
i saw phish for the first time with about 80,000+ people...im sure bangor can handle less than 5,000 people showing up. also typically aside from marijuana and magic mushrooms, possibly molly...phish fans aren't really going to bring the criminal element. i bet there will be a ton of cops as there is everytime these concerts go on. i think its pathetic...especially for something like phish...im just gonna bring a blanket and a bowl and pass out
im just saying what if there was an actual parade? in downtown bangor...not christian or wbc related just...straight normal people...not drag queens, not people with feathers...just straight people...
i thought bout going to it this year. i've seen phish 3 times...all out of state...but yeah...it looks like a cold hard rain that day...if not i might go still
I wouldn't expect DA Almy to charge him with anything more then he was charged with. He is after all the DA that stated there is no penalty for failing to report suspected abuse of a child when you are a mandated reporter. That counselor is a flat out lie....there is a civil penalty for failure to report.
I voted for DA Almy in the past but NEVER will again. He has no intestinal fortitude and Mickey Mouse would make a better DA.
Given your stated position on firearms I would think you of all people would want to see this case prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. His crime caused a parade route to be moved. Both the tractor and the fire engine had successfully negotiated the normal parade route numerous times in the past. But when the parade route was changed due to the shooter it resulted in the death of a man. That at the very least is manslaughter.
Why did you only list legal methods? Are you agenda driven? Maybe he's one of the prohibited person that the Obama administration decided not to prosecute for violation of the Brady Bill. By the way any firearm he touched was illegal for him to possess.
Hmmmm...do you know how he came into possession of the firearm? Could it have been stolen? Could he have purchased it on the black market? Could he have traded another illegal substance for it?
I never said he could be charged with felony murder.
But he can certainly be charged with manslaughter which is reckless conduct that causes another person death.
Now would you like to answer the question asked?
"Would you make the same argument about someone that is driving down the road and the brakes go out, hits and kills someone and during the investigation it's discovered they have a BAC of .10?"
I DO understand the law and a case could be made. The parade route was changed because of his actions.
Would you make the same argument about someone that is driving down the road and the brakes go out, hits and kills someone and during the investigation it's discovered they have a BAC of .10?
"You have always protected corporate. no pan handlers allowed, Right?
And you can show I have said that where? Please try and prove that statement Now. I really want you to try. Please.

"only corporate welfare"
Actually I was against bailing out the insurance companies, Wall Street, the auto manufacturers, etc...If a business fails they fail. It's not up to government or the tax payer to bail them out. Nothing is to big to fail.
So typical when asked for proof to back up claims we get the "do you own homework son" response. I didn't make the claim you did which means you need to provide the proof....that is IF there is proof which I highly doubt based on your response.
"blow up a train so people beg for a pipeline" sure reads like a claim when preceded by "jd who funds these enviro groups if it isn't corporate? cause and effect."
Again, care to share with the rest of us your sourcing material? Who are those "corporate" folks that are funding "these enviro groups"?
Once again I see you edited your comment. What's the matter....don't believe in your original post?
Bigotry is the state of mind of a bigot: someone who, as a result of their prejudices, treats other people with hatred, contempt, or intolerance on the basis of a person's ethnicity, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, disability, socioeconomic status, or other characteristics.
Yes your original comment about his English skills was bigoted. Peter, Paul & Mary once sang a song about bigots written by Pete Seeger called "LISTEN, MISTER BILBO" you might wish to listen to it.
Hardle....here some reading material for you on "Ecoterrorism: Extremism in the Animal Rights and Environmentalist Movements" from the Anti-Defimation League.
I see you edited your comment from the original. That's OK...my post was in response to your comment about Maine not having any jobs that pay a living wage.
They don't have to release the brakes. When the engine loses power the compressor that feeds the air brakes stop working. After a period of time the air brakes bleed off and stop working. Any hand brake set may not be enough to hold a five engine 75 car train in place.
ELF has burned down car dealerships and driven large spikes into trees to prevent harvesting (or to injure/kill the loggers). It's happened before and will happen again. Did it is this case? Don't know....yet.
You left out one small detail in your story BDN. Prior to the detailment a fire of unknown origin was discovered and extinguished in one of the engines by a local fire department. It was after that fire that the air brake or hand brake either failed or was released by parties unknown and the train began its engineerless ride to derailment and subsequent explosion.
And your point would be what? I recall seeing still photos of Ialin effergies hanging at the end of a rope during that election cycle. Should we believe the person was calling for the hanging of Palin?
But that's not what you posted. You posted an absolute "you can't yell fire in a crowded theater" and that isn't true. You absolutely can "yell fire in a crowded theater".
So I take it from your response that you haven't read the SCOTUS Heller decision.
That decision answers the "well regulated militia" question. Membership and/or enlistment is not required in order to exercise ones Second Amendment right to "keep and bear arms".
You may want to read it and educate yourself on that decision.
Wrong. SCOTUS specifically ruled in the Heller decision that membership or enlistment in a "well regulated militia" is NOT necessary for an individual to exercise their Second Amendment right to "keep and bear arms". Period.
I recall President Obama assuring the American public and electorate that under his administration these programs would not happen. So, why aren't YOU calling out the President?
And based on your post I doubt you have ever fired a weapon in your life. "Blowing" apart targets? Really? Hollow points are not explosive and are carried by LEO everyday of the week as a duty round.
No, what is said is one law abiding citizen attempting to limit another law abiding citizens rights under the U.S. Constitution instead of enforcing existing laws and prosecuting those that break those laws.
No, the blame should be placed were it should be on the shooter. Next would be on those people that refuse to enforce existing laws. Do I need to repost the report and statistics on enforcement of the Brady bill?
The truth is the AR-15 was a used firearm and per local ordinance was held for 20 days prior to purchase. It was during those 20 days that the store learned the reason Mr. Kelley was making the purchase was to show how "simple" it was to obtain a AR-15. The store cancelled the purchase and returned the money to Mr. Kelley.
Mark Kelly. On March 5th 2013, Kelly visited Diamondback Police Supply in Tucson, selected an AR-15 style rifle, a .45 caliber handgun, and some high capacity magazines, completed a background check and paid for his purchases.
Within days, the story broke nationally and Kelly claimed that his purchases were made to highlight how easy it is to get a gun. He also added that he intended to turn the AR-15 into the Tucson Police. He intended on keeping the .45 caliber handgun.
So if he wanted to make a point about how "easy" it was to purchase a firearm why did he use a FFL? He knew he had to complete a background check.
Problem is the shooter knew that his actions of popping off some 70+ rounds could lead to the death of innocent bystander.
So the parade route was changed to protect the parade participants and bystanders from this person who decided for whatever reason to start popping off rounds.
Both the tractor and the fire engine have been in this parade before and successfully navigated the mapped our parade route.
Was a mechanical failure a contributory cause? Yes.
Was the shooter a contributory cause? IMHO Yes he was.
Should the shooter be charge with murder? No
Should the shooter be charge with manslaughter? Yes
That's not a conspiracy theory....it's called a legal theory.
If the parade route had not been changed the tractor and the engine would not have been required to make two right hand declining radius turns. Both of these vehicles have been in prior Bangor-Brewer 4th of July Parades without incident. Even if there was a mechanical defect a case could be made that the change in route out excess stress on the equipment causing the failure.
A good prosecutor (and I have lost all faith in DA Almy) could easily make a case for manslaughter. Perrin Oliver actions the morning of July 4th was a proximate cause of Mr. Felanson's untimely death. If he had not started shooting up the neighborhood and causing the parade route to change Mr. Felanson most likely would be alive today.
Yup he is for real and is correct. Perrin Oliver started a chain of events that lead to the death of an individual.
Perrin Oliver decided to shoot up the neighborhood he lived in which lead to the parade route being changed to keep participants and bystanders out of the line of fire. You don't have to have "seen" or "known" about the potential outcome of your actions to be charged with murder.
Your correct it was "avoidable"...if the Perrin Oliver hadn't decided to shoot up the neighborhood the parade route would not have been changed and this incident would likely never have occurred.
I thought the same thing but from a "personnel" issue point of view. It says we "referred" him but that doesn't mean he has sought any assistance at this point. I still believe they (Bangor FD) is walking on a very thin line when it comes to commenting on "personnel" matters like this.
When you cannot defend your position just say the other person is "deflecting" the argument. I suppose if you could defend your position you would. But it seems you cannot...now thumb down this post and move on.
"Smile, if the free cell phone stuff happened, it was a decent marketing tool wasn't it?"
If? You don't get around Bangor much do you. I have personally observed a orange and green easy up with a custom cover with the words "FREE CELL PHONE" on all four sides.
Hammond Street Congregational Church, Pickering Square and the park across the street from the Bangor Homeless Shelter are three sites I have seen this set up.
~~~~~
"Marketing tool"?
No....taxpayer money is what it is.
~~~~~
"If the Republicans had thought of using free cell phones first it would have been ok?"
No I wouldn't be "OK" with it. Remember the President Obama supporter back in 2008 that couldn't wait for the President to pay her "mortgage", put "gas in her tank", etc....That was why she was voting for him. How much more can we afford to "give" until it all comes crashing down on top of us.
I seem to recall President Obama saying he was the answer.
His economic stimulus commission published a paper stating that unemployment would skyrocket without the stimulus package. Congress gave him what he asked for and the unemployment rate skyrocketed with it.
The ACA was going to be the answer for people without health care. Now the employer mandate has been pushed off and California insurance companies are cancelling individual policies effective January 1, 2014.
If President Obama were a Republican you would be calling for his head. Instead many people turn a blind eye to what is happening and pat him of the back for the job he is doing.
You should see if you can get a refund for the history class that taught you that rubish.
The Founders just finished a long protracted war for Independence against the best trained and equipped army in the word. They didn't believe in standing armies and believed in the militia system of every able bodied male in the community.
Heller settled the meaning of "welll regulated militia".
Is this from the post I responded to? "Sure, but the difference is that while Democrats do and have done things that citizens and society need/needed and appreciated, the GOP/Tea Party has consistently narrowly focused their efforts on those who already have everything they could ever need."
I'm asking if free cell phones is one of those things the Democrats felt was a society "need/needed and appreciated".v
No deflection, just a question.
But I have discovered that uncomfortable question suddenly become "deflection", "distractions" or some other similar word. Rather than attempting to answer the question or justify the program it's far easier to to hide behind "deflection", "distraction" or some other similar word.
Then our elected officials lack the principle to stand up and make their vote count. Please explain why I should continue to vote for people like this.
Thanks for putting words in my mouth...it is greatly appreciated. I hope you understand sarcasm when you read it but just in case you don't....that was sarcasm.
Now, if you don't think that both sides do the same thing that is something that I cannot help. One party is in control and the other side tries every tactic in the book to stay relevant
You didn't clarify anything. You do what you and a few others do oh so very well...make unrelated post and comments and when other posters question you and others scream "deflection....deflection...".
The story is about a fund raiser with a CCW class coupled with it.
"First you're gonna have to tell me why you're asking a question that is rather unrelated to my comment."
The story is about the GOP holding a fundraiser and linking a CCW class with the fundraiser. You introduced "Well at least this time they’re leaving out God, sheets, zygotes and fetuses."
You then make the statement "Why they can’t simply stop continuously hating on people who are not them or like them is anyone’s guess."
~~~~~
So how is ANY of you original post related to the article posted to the BDN website? Or "Is this another case of deflection to turn a conversation in a direction you'd prefer it to go in?"
I am sorry for you loss but your words will be lost on many that post here as evidenced by two thumbs down. Many are callous, uncaring and live for the suffering of others.
Save your fingers with Bangorian....it could be Taylor Swift and he would say something like....What????? Another country act....is that what we built this for?
1. I looked at the Springfield XD series and dislike the disassemble method they use. That's my personal opinion and I know several people that own and like this firearm.
2. While the FBI may have issued a report in 1988 they have since adopted 7 different versions of the Glock 17, 19, 21, 22, 23, 26 and 27.
3. Right or wrong Glock has 65% of the U.S. law enforcement market.
The only way a Glock will fire is to pull the trigger. As near as I can tell from reading the article titles you provided was in each and every instance it was handler negligence.
I do believe we have established the safe and proper way to disassemble a Glock several times and also established the Chief did not follow safe and proper gun handling. Continuing to go over and over is rather pointless don't you think?
I respect your opinion but to state that a firearm could not be secured is not true. There are any number of different ways a firearm could be secured from "little fingers" and still remain available for use.
And I believe that teachers are more than capable of defending students. Many, many people when faced with life threatening situations do things they would not normally do on an everyday basis.
Here are two different versions of the same story published in todays BDN.
Let's look at trigger pulls of striker fired semi-auto pistols vs. double action semi-auto pistols.
First two examples of striker fired pistols.
Factory trigger pull for a Glock 23 is 5.5 pounds.
Factory trigger pull for a Ruger SR40C is 6.4 pounds
Next an example of double action semi-auto pistol.
Factory trigger pull for a Ruger P95 14 pounds double action and 5 pounds single action.
I have fired both single action, double action and striker fired pistols. In my opinion the single action and/or striker fired pistols are superior to double action pistols for one very important reason....the trigger pull is the same on each and every shot. With double action pistols the first pull is long and subsequent trigger pulls are very short. In training it is all about muscle memory and knowing when the trigger breaks on each and every shot is very important. Again, that is just my opinion.
If you're going to conduct a study to determine how many times a firearm kept in a home are used in other than self defense cases and then use any firearm use (kept or brought into the home) it matters a great deal. It actually corrupts the study and makes the data garbage.
The example offered is not even remotely similar to what happened here.
Difference #1 - he lied to police.
Difference #2 - he was "checking the trigger system" when the firearm went "off". He wasn't preparing the firearm for cleaning.
The steps for cleaning a Glock include pulling the trigger after clearing the firearm. What the Chief did was stupid, ignorant and yes reckless for not clearing the firearm prior to pulling the trigger but did it rise to the level of a criminal charge? I don't think so.
See my answer below pretty...sometimes I don't understand why people thumb down when the person is asking legitimate question when they don't understand why something is this way or that.
You do not need to pull the trigger of the Glock to release the magazine (or as some people call it the clip).
To strip down a Glock for cleaning you remove the magazine. Pull back on the slide and look to see if a round is in the chamber and release the slide. Point in a safe direction i.e. at no living thing and pull the trigger. Then you pull back on the slide again, look again and release the slide again and pull the trigger again. You then (and I not going to even attempt to describe hand position but at no time is the hand in front of the barrel) pull back of the slide approximately 1/4 of an inch and with your other hand engage two tabs on either side of the frame and allow slide to slide forward and off the frame.
There are several errors in Kellerman's study and he even admits one of them but never corrected the study.
"The students of Dr. Mark Ferris's Mathematical Statistics 460" class
asked, "In how many of the homicides was the victim killed with a gun that
was kept in the house rather than a gun that was brought to the house
by the perpetrator?" Kellerman responded "Ninety-three percent of the homicides involving firearms occurred in homes where a gun was kept, according to the proxy respondents." Interesting that he doesn't make a distinction between "kept" and not used and "kept" and used. Four year later in another letter Kellermann acknowledges his error, but fails to directly answer the question or correct the study. The New England Journal of Medicine -- February 3, 1994 -- Volume 330, Number 5
Another issue is using cases involving households with a history of arrests, drug use and violence. When those households are removed the rates fall to 7% from those you note. We already know that violence begets violence and when you lead a violent life you are more likely to be the victim of violence.
Kellerman has never directly responded to any of the issues his fellow researches have brought up with his 1993 study.
I can't think of one person that has ever been prosecuted for shooting themselves while cleaning their weapon unless it injured someone besides themselves.
Detailed explanation - he failed to clear his weapon, pulled the trigger while his left hand was in front of the barrel, weapon discharge, round struck the left hand of the chief causing bodily injury. Anything else?
Gee seems the article talked about the congestion around Pickering Square, etc..."you people"? I'm not "you people" but you wouldn't understand that.
Here's some advice for you.
1. Don't assume you know ANYTHING about the posters here...you don't.
2. Don't like what the city council is doing...start attending council meetings.
3. Learn how laws/ordinances are passed...normally it takes a government entity to do it.
4. Don't like the laws/ordinances being passed...refer to #2 above and make you public voice heard where it counts.
How do we know they aren't doing that already? Remember they tracked the killer of the woman from downtown to behind Hollywood slots through surveillance tapes?
I didn't bring up the skate park...that was TheyreTheirThereNow
~~~~~
"Where are our beautiful green spaces that made the City welcoming?"
Nothing has happened to them. They are still there if you care to go look. Stop trying to make an issue out of nothing.
~~~~~
"Oh, under a brick building in several locations. And between bars in another."
In your opinion it looks "ridiculous". I haven't heard one other person express that opinion. I have however read another poster say that about the sculpture in general. One person art is another persons junk.
Does that belief hold for ALL art work? How did you feel about the Governor removing the panels from the Department of Labor? Don't they belong to the people of Maine?
Did you even read this story? It said the majority of people that spoke want the hub to stay. It said that safety concerns revolve around buses, pedestrian traffic and car traffic congestion in the circle was still a problem. It went on to say that the foot patrol added by BPD has resolved many of the safety concerns of fighting, etc...
I didn't twist anything. You stated the fountain wasn't a danger and was moved anyway. I asked you who said it was a danger.
So now you want to move onto the "skate park" and lack of sidewalks. Why? How is that related to the topic of the article. Oh, I don't have any "friends" at city hall. This discussion is t about class warfare. It's about where the hub of the BAT should be located.
What extra revenue from tickets are you talking about? We have three part-time individuals handing out tickets already. The city is considering privatizing that function so forget about that.
Another poster said let the "downtown businesses" pay for it. OK so the next time you need the fire department or a police officer or a tree removed from in front of your house should the city should send you the bill?
I guess you missed the foot patrol BPD added in the Downtown and the article this past week about it. It's the only area of the chit that has a dedicated foot patrol. If the added the "permanent police substation" like you suggest you will then scream that you not want to pay for it or let the BAT pay for it or maybe Hollywood Casino should pay for it or some other such nonsense.
As the Bangor Police Department is less than one minute away by cruiser and maybe three minutes walking time wouldn't a "permanent police substation" be a duplication of services and a waste of taxpayer money?
Yes they do....and pay dearly for it through sales taxes (contrary to popular belief "Universal Health Care" is not "free" health care). And if they cannot obtain the necessary care or wait on a list they go where? To the United States.
Brush away....at least you know your wrong for doing so. Just be careful who you paint with the brush. You don't know me and while I might be a "registered" Republican I voted for Cutler, King and Michaud. Voted not to repeal SSM (first vote) and voted to support SSM (second vote).
Please don't say something that I'm not doing. I gave an example of the current (I tend to live in the current not the past) administration.
If the Founding Fathers designed three branches of government that are equal in power, one no more or less important then the other then they need ALL be held to the same standards.
We can learn from the past and at some point in our future we are going to look back on this point in our history and wonder what happened? How did we allow our government to get so our of hand? One can hope that we can learn from these examples of government (at all levels) of excess but as we seem to repeat the same problems over and over I some how we will learn anything from it.
Not confused about anything. You want a government above reproach then you need to have high standards across the board.
Remember the President telling the country he would limit Lobbyists on Capital Hill and no one would serve on his administration that had been a Lobbyist within a certain time frame?
Remember he appointed a Secretary of the Treasury with "tax issues" and look where we find ourselves now.
We have a right to expect our leaders to set the standard and if you are going to hold the judiciary branch to one standard and not the rest....well that's just looking for problems.
Will you hold elected members of Congress of all parties to the same standard? How about members that hold positions of influence within the administration? How many spouses of President Obama's staff hold positions within the news media?
Are you high standards for the Republicans the same for Democrats?
I'm not debating the number of 5-4 decisions. I stated that some of the most important decisions are 5-4 decisions. One that immediately comes to mind is the 1966 Miranda v. Arizona decisions.
The first section of the autobahn was built prior to Hitler's rise to power. Construction on the Köln-Bonn Autobahn began in 1929 and was opened in 1932 (Hitler rose to power in 1933).
Every single Justice did something prior to nomination. 52 people found him suitable for the court. As I stated above, there is a impeachment process. It starts with the House.
My facts are straight. I don't believe what a spouse does or doesn't do should either qualify or disqualify a person from high office. Supreme Court Justices are subject to impeachment...have a problem write a letter to your U.S. Representative.
No defect....the field stripping process for a Glock is very specific. Remove the magazine, engage the slide, LOOK to insure nothing is in the chamber, point in a safe direction, pull trigger, engage slide again, LOOK to insure nothing is in the chamber again, point in safe direction, pull trigger again. Then continue with field stripping.
"I did a little research and if our property values go up so does their share of financing."
When a city or towns valuation goes up the monies they receive from the state goes down.
~~~~~
"Revenue share may never happen again."
Worse case scenario is 2 years and that's only if Governor LePage's budget passes in total. It wont.
~~~~~
" So when they said the TIF funds were going to be paying for part of the Arena they actually ment the property tax payer?"
No, the only funds that go to the TIF are those from the entity that has the TIF status. In this case Hollywood Casino.
~~~~
I thought you were serious about leaning about TIFs and what hey are. The new Arena benefits far more than a few downtown businesses.
Tax increment financing, or TIF, is a public financing method that is used as a subsidy for redevelopment, infrastructure, and other community-improvement projects.
It takes taxes that would be paid and places those dollars in a TIF account which can only be used for certain approved projects within a TIF district (i.e. Bangor Downtown TIF can only be used to support, improve services, infrastructure, etc...within the district) that meet state guidelines.
It also "shields" (for lack of a better word) those taxes being counted by the state and county governments. That means they cannot be counted towards the state portion of the school budget, revenue sharing, etc...which would mean those state funds would be reduced as the value of the city increases.
Not sure if that is true or not but you are more likely to be struck by lightening then being charged and prosecuted for attempting to purchase a firearm from a FFL...in 2010 13 felons/prohibited people either plead guilty or were found guilty out of 76,142 NICS rejections.
So the buckets and tarps at the library are for what? And who should pay for education?
If you have an issues with how money is spent go to a council meeting and express your displeasure. I wonder when the last council meeting was that you attended.
Collision: A collision is an isolated event in which two or more moving
bodies (colliding bodies) exert forces on each other for a relatively
short time.
Although the most common colloquial use of the word "collision" refers to accidents in which two or more objects collide, the scientific use of the word
"collision" implies nothing about the magnitude of the forces.
Correct it terminates at North Station where all northbound trains terminate and is connected to South Station by the MBTA Green Line to South Station with a change at Park Street.
One word...money. UMaine controls all the expenses and reaps all the money (i.e. ticket sales, concessions, store, 50/50 raffle, etc...). To move to the Cross they would have to split with the management company and the city of Bangor all of these items. Add the cost of police details and an ambulance (all of which UMaine supplies at Alfond) and the dollars and cents just don't add up to moving the team to the Cross.
Question Momma which comes from the yahoo search you linked to above. The question is based on the third paragraph of a PRNewswire story called "Gun Violence Survivors, Faith Leaders, And Local Activists Rally In Concord To Hold Senator Ayotte Accountable For Voting Against Tough-On-Crime Background Checks Bill"
My question is this: Was the list that John Cantin delivered to Senator Ayotte's office of more than 6,000 names of people who have been MURDERED (emphasis mine) with guns since the December shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown the same list read at the rally in Concord?
Mr. Hayes states that criminals have been denied a firearm "more than a million times under the NICS system." Good...the system works. But what Mr. Hayes fails to mention is how many of those criminals are charged with the federal crime associated with the attempt to purchase and further how many are convicted of the crime.
To answer that question here is one source "Enforcement of the Brady Act, 2010: Federal and State Investigations and Prosecutions of Firearm Applicants Denied by a NICS Check in 2010" and was paid for with US Department of Justice Funds.
The study states in part on page 9:
"Data on enforcement of the Brady Act is available for the five - year period from 2006 to 2010. Selected statistics from each year’s cases are summarized in Appendix table I. FBI referrals of NICS denials to the DENI Branch decreased about 1%, from 77,233 in 2006 to 76,142 in 2010. The DENI Branch’s referrals to ATF field divisions decreased nearly 50%, from 9,432 for 2006 to 4,732 for 2010. Unlawful possession investigations decreased by 26% from 2006 to 2010 and investigations that resulted in a firearm retrieval decreased by over 21%. The number of charges referred by field offices for prosecution fell by over 77%, from 273 for the 2006 cases to 62 for the 2010 cases. The number of charges that resulted in guilty pleas and verdicts fell by about 82%, from 73 for the 2006 cases to 13 for the 2010 cases." Source - https://www.ncjrs.gov/pdffiles...
So again I ask why are we not enforcing existing laws?
In 2010:
76,142 denials under NICS resulting in
4,732 referrals to ATF field divisions which resulted in
62 actual cases moving forward which resulted in
13 guilty pleas and verdicts
This is crazy! Someone attempts to purchase a firearm from a FFL, fails the background check and stands a 0.00081427% chance of a criminal investigation actual moving towards prosecution and a 0.00017073% chance of actually be convicted. I stand a better chance of being struck by lightening (0.00033333) in my lifetime!
Momma with all due respect here is evidence you asked for.
"Report details Dexter family murder-suicide, calls for new way of handling of domestic violence cases"
"Steven Lake should have been in a jail cell on June 13, the day he killed his estranged wife and their 13-year-old son and 12-year-old daughter, the report argues. He was awaiting a July 5 court date, when he was to face charges for threatening his family with a handgun on June 14, 2010."
"In the year that Amy Lake’s protection from abuse order was active against Steven, he violated that order at least five times but spent fewer than two days in jail for those violations, the report found. He also stalked her on Facebook, it said."
"The fifth time he defied the protection order, he killed his family and then himself at the house at 173 Shore Road in Dexter where Amy and her children were living."
"Steven Lake shouldn’t have had access to the weapon he used to kill Amy, Monica and Coty, according to the report. It said law enforcement should have inventoried Steven’s arsenal of about 20 guns and made sure he couldn’t get his hands on them, as required under state statute."
DA Chris Almy says otherwise but this is the same person that claims there is no penalty for failing to report child abuse when you are a mandated reporter. There is...it's a civil fine but it is a penalty. I have lost all faith in DA Almy over this and the Carlson case.
If the existing laws had been enforced. If the police had inventoried the firearms as required by law and presented to the judge. If bail had been set at a higher amount. If he wasn't given FIVE chances when he showed he just didn't get it.
That's what I mean when I say we aren't enforcing existing laws.
Here is another interesting little fact about the list....the list included terrorists, suicides, home invaders shot by home owners during the course of their crime, murderers who turned their guns on themselves, and police officer shootings of criminals.
We're you at the rally in New Hampshire? I doubt it so really you don't know how the list was presented to those in attendance. The MUL is presenting the facts as they are reporting on the rally. Again please stop with the personal attacks.
Just admit you cannot provide the source post where you have defended a persons rights under the Second Amendment. Not contesting it is not defending it.
Yes it is a personal attack when documented sources have been provided that says otherwise. Your personal attacks and name calling are tiresome. If you have an issue with what the Manchester Union Leader is calling the "list" take it up with them.
Read the last sentence of the post above. I answered your question. "NO LETS CALLOUT CRIMINALS INSTEAD." "Questionable backgrounds" leaves a great deal of room for interpretation.
We aren't talking about every fact. We are talking about facts that either support or detract from your stated position.
By the way the former a mayor and Police a Chief also claimed the proposed background check would have "prevented" Newtown as it would have barred the shooter from purchasing the firearm used. Mr. Hale pointed out that wasn't the case as the shooter stole the firearm after killing his mother. What did the former Mayor do? Nothing he just moved onto his next talking point ignoring that he was wrong or ignorant of the facts of Newtown.
And we resort to name calling which is par for the course when dealing with wolf.
What was the purpose of the list? Why were at least three criminals that died at the hands of the police on the list?
Maybe I will ask George Hale to replay the interview with the former Mayor of Lewiston to serif he used the words "victim list". I seem to recall he used the words "gun violence victims" over and over. He was incidentally promoting the reading of this "list" during the interview.
He also made the erroneous claim that a "background check would have prevented" the Newtown shooter "from purchasing his firearm". To Mr. Halle's credit he pointed out he stole the firearms after murdering his mother.
There is already a law at the federal and state level that prohibit felons and others from owning or possessing firearms. It's not enforced in many cases at both levels.
The US Justice Department does not prosecute violations of the current background check law.
There's a family in Dexter dead because the police never conducted the inventory required by law after a conviction on domestic abuse charge. It's required under Maine law and oops...sorry and no penalty or disciplinary action was taken
It's also convenient to blame and ignore what isn't being currently enforced.
We don't enforce the laws we have already it is unlawful under state and federal laws for a felon to own, borrow, possess, etc...a firearm but we don't prosecute those that attempt to purchase one and fail the background check. That's a fact.
You seem to ignore facts when they get in the way of the agenda you defend.
Want to call out "questionable" people? No lets callout CRIMINALS instead.
Nope. Not once have you defended law abiding citizens and their rights under the Second Amendment. Not once.
You wish to limit things that don't exist i.e. "assault weapons".
You support every proposal of President Obama's plan to prevent another Newtown and ignore not one of his proposals would have prevented the anew town shooter from doing what he did.
When have you ever separated out legal gun owners from criminals. You want to limit what a law abiding citizen can do based on a criminal. Let's try enforcing those laws already on the books including those which President Obama's Justice Department seem to ignore...remember those statistics that show how few criminals are prosecuted for attempting to purchase a firearm.
By that logic Secretary of State Powell only read what someone else prepared for him and relied on other agencies reports when he appeared before Congress and the UN about WMDs and Iraq.
No I want some honesty and checking of facts prior to people making statements that are factually inaccurate. Here is the link to the story....incidentally I was wrong about the location. It was Princeton not Baileyville. http://bangordailynews.com/200...
And it not a "reach" if you are out promoting your position on a topic and using your background as an authority on the matter to expect them to be able to answer questions put to them accurately.
Well let's see....you want sources. Well I did list the one from New Hampshire and I can list more if you like.
The list used also contained Christopher
Dorner who was shot and killed by law enforcement officers in February and Kevin Bailey, who was killed by police after opening fire on officers during a traffic stop. Source -http://www.unionleader.com/art...
Momma let it go? No can't do that. Just like the former Mayor of Lewiston stating that he and the police Chief of Portand stating they cannot "recall" a legal gun owner preventing a crime here in Maine EVER on WVOM the other morning. The one that immediately came to mind was the grandmother in Baileyville that held a home invader at gun point a couple of years ago.
The more often misinformation or distortions are allowed to be repeated the more the come to be fact.
This group is using distorted information and untruths to promote their cause. That's dishonest.
If a group calls themselves Mayors Against Illegal Guns uses a list that includes police involved shootings isnt dishonest then I don't know what is. Is it "illegal" for a police officer to discharge their weapon in defense of themselves or the public?
They didn't check the lust and just took it at face value. You don't find it reprehensible to include police officer involved shootings in a list being used by a group calling themselves "Mayors Against Illegal Guns"? Respond if you wish but I know you'll call me "dishonest" or that I'm "derailing" the conversation by bringing this up.
Get out and enjoy the beautiful weather wolf...winter will be fast upon us.
So the purpose of reading the lust was what? Did they list other "victims" if police gunfire? Was the list purposely over inflated? Why did Slate put the terrorist on the list in the first place? Isn't it "dishonest" (to use a word you use) to place a name of a person that murdered people with a bomb and was later shot and killed by police on the same list as (as Momma stated) a 13 year old unidentified boy?
No argument but the on ice Captains are supposed to be leaders and motivators too. There is more than enough blame to go around and it's going to be interesting season coming up. The bulk of the team and even many of the freshmen were recruited by Whitehead.
In there haste to make a point they included a terrorist as a victim and didn't "know" it. Momma the Mayors Against Illegal Guns has caste themselves as "knowing" what is best for America and is proposing "solutions" based on that "knowledge". But if that "knowledge" is based on faulty facts what does it become?
Ms. Royal while I admire your opinion I have to say using a group like the Mayors Against Illegal Guns as your "source" for supporting information is distressing. This is the group that named Boston Marathon bombing suspect Tamerlan Tsarnaevas a "victim" of gun violence. Tsarnaevas is NOT a victim and shame on you for using a group that would so name Tsarnaevas as one.http://www.unionleader.com/art...
"The Arena was a citizens referendum after the people you choose to protect already approved it at the council level."
The Council voted for it yes. The new arena had been talked about for at least a decade. Some Bangor citizens disagreed with the decision and gathered enough signatures to force a city wide vote. They lost.
~~~~~
"Many newspaper articles how the chamber forced the people into it."
Please provide ONE newspaper article that says the Chamber of Commerce "forced the people into it". Just one.
~~~~~
"Along with southerland and Weston oop's I mean Lis's marketeting @50K the product, the vote went your way."
Did you expect the proponents not to campaign for it? That's there right as is the opponents right to campaign against it.

"At least now and then you folks attempt to make it look legit."
Who are "you folks"? If you are referring to the chamber I am not a member.
~~~~~
"You guys are good I'll give you that and I never
thought any different. You have my respect as to be able to get what you want done on the taxpayers dime."
Business leaders are by definition "leaders". They don't lead by sitting on the behinds and watching others do things. Did you ever stop and think that maybe, just maybe the business leaders have a vision for Bangor that goes beyond malls and people moving away?
~~~~~
"It's the only money anyone wants to invest anymore."
You do realize that the money used to pay the bond back are coming from the revenue generated by Hollywood Casino? Now if you are going to claim "what about the upkeep and maintenance costs?" My response will be who paid for the upkeep and maintenance of the old auditorium and civic center.
Last time I checked the citizens of Bangor VOTED for the Cross Center. Am I mistaken about that?
And wasn't Alex Gray and the WFC series happy with the old orientation of the stage? Wasn't the shifting of the stage due to citizen complaints about noise? And the Council didn't have to move earth if they had left the orientation of the stage alone did they?
In your mind I'm sure you see it that way. But others see your posts for what they are...attacks on a person who can no longer defend himself.
You haven't even been able to bring yourself to say that your sorry he lost his life. That says more about your character then you could possible know.
Ryan the poster has been in attack mode since the story broke last week. He has attacked the rider over and over. He has not once said "gee....I sorry for your lose", but has revealed the death of this young man.
Articles that involve death are very emotional and people forget the person have family, friends, co-workers, etc... It's time Mr. Green grew up and realized that.
Personal defense weapon is a Glock 23. I also have a Ruger P85 but I find it to heavy for concealed carry. I also have a Mossberg 12G with the first two shells being bird shot (decided to give the person a chance) followed by 00 buck. So to answer your question...yes you really need to stop assuming things that you have no clue about.
You should learn not to lump people into categories based on posts. I don't ride bicycles or motorcycles. But I do know the young woman that rear ended me a few weeks ago was following to close. Do you think she learned something from that considering she was blaming me for stopping?
The bicyclist did something bicyclists do dozens of times during a long ride. But I assume you are perfect...you never adjust your GPS while driving....you never drink a cup of coffee while driving....you never eat a breakfast sandwich from a fast food joint....you never adjust the volume of the radio or change stations...etc...etc...etc...
Nothing "self righteous" about my comment...people are not perfect and they make mistakes. Sometimes those mistakes lead to death.
It was an accident but please continue crowing and forget about the man's family if that makes you feel better. I know your position will mean nothing to the family grieving over this accident other than increasing their pain.
With the exception of you and a handful of others that were blaming the biker many posters were asking to wait until all the info came out. This was an ACCIDENT...was it preventable? Maybe...maybe not. But bottom line it was an accident and a young person lost his life riding to help others.
Do you think you can look inside yourself and offer condolences instead of blame?
I believe judging by the lack of incidents and accidents over the years the bicyclists DO recognize their responsibilities. A trek like this is not something you just jump on a bike and do. It takes training and lots of practice. I personally know 3 bicyclists that have cycled the trek multiple times and not one of them has ever just jumped on their bike without lots and lots of training.
So are we making an assumption that a politician or a politicians relative is making money on the "license plate technology" or do you really know this to be a fact?
"We didn't pay a penny towards the civic center, now we do."
If you are referring to the old Bangor Auditorium and Civic Center the citizens have been paying many, many, many dollars to the "upkeep" and "maintenance" of that facility. Yes the citizens of Bangor are going to continue to pay for the "upkeep" and "maintenance" of the new one too.
If you were referring to something else, could you please be a bit more specific?
If you are unable to stop you vehicle you are going to fast. Bikes, motorcycles share the road. Do you maintain the same speed when two vehicles are approaching from opposite directions and two people are walking on the shoulder? No. One slows down and allows the other vehicle to pass and then the vehicle that slows down passes with due care. At least that's the way I drive.
Yes...YOU. Because you could have said the same thing. That it's not about politics but you didn't and you took it to a whole new level with your rant.
I drive 40,000+ miles a year just for work. I have seen many, many commercial trucks doing very stupid and dangerous things.
Ex: pulling back into the travel lane and forcing the car they were passing off the road or into the breakdown lane.
Ex: Exceeding the reduced speed limit of 45 mph on the interstate in a snow storm causing white out conditions when they pass cars that are observing the reduced speed limit.
Ex: Swerving from the travel lane into the passing lane in an attempt to strike a crown feeding on roadkill.
Respect, safety and common sense are a two way street.
I could also share stories about truck drivers blowing by when the speed limit has been reduced to 45 mph causing white out conditions on the interstate.
About truck drivers speeding up on passing lanes so you cannot pass.
About truck drivers weaving back and forth on cell phone.
About truck drivers forcing cars off the road or into the breakdown lane by entering the travel lane to soon.
About truck drivers swerving in an attempt to hit a crow in the roadway.
I have seen all of the above and more...I hope you brother-in-law is not one of those I have witnessed.
Representative Michaud has carried the 2nd Congressional District several times and very easily too. The 1st Congressional District is far more liberal and progressive then the 2nd CD so I really cannot agree with your claim that he "cannot win a Statewide seat in Maine."
Not sure how that would work out. Funny thing is it wasn't a problem when Governor Baldacci was elected not once but twice with less than a majority vote. Why is it a problem now? Why didn't people demand it following the 2002 & 2006 election?
Some people vote "party line". Others vote to prevent another candidate from winning. Still others vote for those that most closely agree with opinions of issues.
Note to BDN - I do believe the headline of "Comments for: Thursday, June 14, 2013: Government hurting preschools, get care close to home" should read "Comments for: FRIDAY, June 14, 2013: Government hurting preschools, get care close to home"
Are you referring to Iraq? Because if you are, just because WMDs were not found doesn't mean they didn't exist. We know they existed as the were used against their own people. We know they existed as they were used in the Iran-Iraq war.
EVERY major intelligence agency in the world believed the same thing, that Iraq had WMDs.
